Why should I study EAL Certificate in Engineering Technology (Level 1)?
This Level 1 engineering qualification has been developed by EAL in collaboration with schools, colleges, training providers and industry. The course has a strong vocational bias which upon completion could lead to:

  • Further learning opportunities through a work based apprenticeship programme
  • To further study on the BTEC First Certificate/Diploma in Manufacturing Engineering
  • Directly into employment in Engineering/Manufacturing industry


What will be studied on the course?
Learners will study five units overall, one mandatory and four optional. Optional units 002, 004 & 006 involve practical activities in the mechanical, electrical and fabrication and welding workshops backed up by theory in the classroom giving the learner an appreciation of the three main engineering disciplines. Unit 013 gives the learner an appreciation of the Maths and Science skills used in the Engineering Industry.

Unit 001: Understanding Working in Engineering

Optional Units:
Unit 002: Understanding Machining Engineering Materials
Unit 004: Understanding Joining Engineering Materials
Unit 006: Understanding Electrical Installations
Unit 013: Understanding Basic Maths & Science Used in Engineering

When does the course start and how long does it last?
This course starts in September and lasts for one academic year ending in June.

What qualifications are needed to do the course?
Entry requirements for the course are GCSE grades E and F.

Where is the course based?
The course is based at The Centre of Engineering Enterprise, Derwentside College (Main Campus) Consett.

How will the learner be assessed?
Units are assessed internally through completion of practical tasks and assignments relevant to the individual units. Final grades will be awarded as Pass, Merit & Distinction depending on the number of marks achieved by the student.

How much will the course cost?
You may be asked to cover the cost of transport for any visits arranged throughout the course. Textbooks relating to the course are available for loan from our Learning Resource Centre as well as within the department. A Scientific Calculator is required and these can be purchased within the department for a small cost. Students will also be required to provide their own stationery.

What progression routes are available?
On successful completion of this course learners could progress to:

  • BTEC 1st Diploma/Certificate in Manufacturing Engineering
  • A work based apprenticeship programme
  • Directly into employment in Engineering/Manufacturing Industry as a semi-skilled operator
