Course description
This course combines both theory and practical animal related work to cover the key areas of routine management and welfare for animals. Methods of study will include demonstrations, lectures, tutorials, practical tasks and assignment work with work experience on the animal unit. The industry experience unit of the course provides you with the perfect opportunity to gain skills and experience required for the animal care industry. Students also take National Vocational Qualifications in Animal Care as part of the course.
3 Core Modules:
• Animal accommodation, handling and care
• Industry and Organisations
• Industry Experience
Plus 4 Specialist units. The college will choose 4 from the following:
• Introduction to Biology
• Horse Care
• Retail and Customer Service
• Breeds and Grooming
• Habitat Establishment and Maintenance
• Animal Health
Functional Skills are also integrated into the programme. This is an essential skill for employment in the animal care industry. Opportunities are also available to upgrade your GCSEs in Maths and English.
Assessment is by internally assessed coursework, which includes both written and practical assessments.
Final award
If successful, you will achieve an Edexcel (BTEC) First Diploma in Animal Care.

This course is based at Common Leys Farm.
