First Diploma in Public Services

What will I be learning?

On this course you will learn about the role of the uniformed public services in society. You will develop a range of transferable life skills, such as leadership, communication and teamwork.

You will complete the following units of study

First Certificate
- Public Services Skills
- Uniformed Public Services Fitness
- Adventurous Activities and Teamwork for Public Services

If you successfully complete all three First Certificate Units you will be invited to progress on to the First Diploma.

First Diploma
- Uniformed Services Employment
- The Value of Sport and Recreation in the Public Services
- Expedition Skills

Work Experience and Community Support
There will be an opportunity for some work experience and community support projects between Easter and May.

How will I learn?

You will complete all six units via a combination of lectures, personal research, talks and visits, residential and practical sessions. For one unit you are required to participate in a two day long expedition to a remote and wilderness environment.
This is an exciting, demanding and active course and full participation is expected from all students to enable you to gain the most from it.

Assessment will be through the production of a portfolio of evidence gathered. This will include written essays, presentation to the class, practical activities and observations.

What else might I want to know?

Public Service courses are highly disciplined. High standards of behaviour, attendance and punctuality will be expected. There will be a requirement to partake in the practical elements of the course. You will need to be prepared to fully participate in sports, water sports, outdoor activities, visits to uniformed public services and attend an expedition to a remote location as part of the course. You will be given more details of these activities and associated course costs during interview. You will be required to wear uniform at all times in college and whilst on visits.

Physical Training and Adventure Sport play an important role in the structure of the course which is aimed at preparing you physically and mentally for entry in to your chosen Uniformed Public Service.

Although active and vocational this is an academic course with possible progression on to National Diploma and as such it has a considerable amount of classroom-based learning. Approximately 60% of your learning takes place in the classroom.

What can I do afterwards?

On successful achievment of this course, you could progress on to a National Diploma at South Devon College or move directly in to employment
