About this course

To study at Level 3 you will need five GCSEs at grade 'C' or above (this must include a C in English) for National Diploma. If you do not achieve these grades you will study on the NVQ programme.

What will I be learning?

This course is for talented football players, male and female, aged 16-18 years of age who wish to have the opportunity to progress their football and educational skills. You will either study the Level 3 National Diploma or Level 2 NVQ.
On the National Diploma you will study 18 modules over two years. Subjects include: body in action, fitness testing, sports nutrition, psychology, coaching, and leadership, practical sports, treatment of sports injuries and sports massage. All the modules will be football-related where possible. You will also have the opportunity to take additional vocational qualifications, including the FA Levels 1 and 2 Coaching Awards and Sports Leadership Awards.
On the NVQ pathway you will study Activity Leadership Level 2 in your first year. If you achieve this and the FA Level 1 Coaching Award, you will study the specialist Level 2 Coaching Football qualification in your second year.
Students on either pathway will have the opportunity to take National Governing Body coaching awards in a variety of sports. Tasks completed as part of any coaching awards may be used as evidence towards your overall qualification.
Students will undertake 10 - 12 hours of specialist football coaching each week.

How will I learn?

On the National Diploma you will be learn and assessed through a variety of methods, including written assignments, presentations, and observation of practical skills. Assessment will be continuous throughout the two years and grades are awarded at pass, merit or distinction.
On the NVQ pathway you must demonstrate your ability to plan, deliver & evaluate practical sessions in a variety of sports. You will also show your competence in health & safety, first aid & teamwork. You will gather evidence from your practical activities and compile a portfolio. You will be assessed on your ability to perform a range of tasks and your knowledge of the various areas.

What else might I want to know?

You must be a talented footballer looking for the opportunity to improve your technical, tactical & physical ability. You must also be fully committed to achieving academic qualifications. You will not be accepted unless we are satisfied that you have the desire to reach your full potential as a footballer and as a student.
You must be willing to play for the college in all leagues or competitions that we enter and may also be expected to represent the college on tours either at home or abroad. You must demonstrate a positive attitude and maintain high standards of behaviour on and off the field.
The selection process is as follows:
You must apply to the college and attend an interview.
You must supply a letter of recommendation regarding your football ability and attitude from a football manager/coach or teacher.
You must attend formal trials organised by the college.
You must attend a Welcome Day organised by the college.
You must attend a health and fitness assessment.

What can I do afterwards?

At the end of your two-year programme you may be invited to stay with the Football Academy for a third year, depending on your age and the progress you have made. You could take the NVQ Level 3 in Sports Development to further prepare you for a career in the sports industry. Success on the National Diploma course will give you the chance to progress to Higher Education, either through a Foundation Degree at South Devon College or by applying to universities.
Possible career paths open to you would include: sports coaching, leisure & recreation positions at sports or leisure centres, sports development work with local authorities, instructor at a gym or fitness centre, or the chance to specialise in areas such as sports injuries and sports massage.
