About this course
Five GCSEs at grade C or above.
It is a requirement to be assessed through a practical sports performance (Unit 2, Unit 3). It is therefore advised that students are regular sports performers within a specific sport. We strongly advise that all students enrol in a sports performance academy to maximise their opportunity to achieve desired practical grade(s).

The Programme
AS Level looks at the following areas: understanding the body systems and a healthy, active lifestyle, psychological and socio-cultural factors affecting performance and analysis of candidates role as a performer, official and coach. The A2 Level builds on the foundation of the AS Level. The modules covered are physiology and psychology; elite performance development, casework - practical performance and analysis. Assessment for AS and A2 is by exam and coursework.
The Programme Content
AS U1: Applied Physiology, Skill acquisition, Psychology for sports performance,Opportunities for participation.
AS U2: Analysis and evaluation of physical activity as a performer and/or in adopted roles (coach, performer, official).
A2 U3: Applied physiology and Psychology to optimise performance, and evaluating contemporary influences.
A2 U4: Optimising practical performance (practical, observation and analysis).
Assessment for AS and A2 is by exam, coursework, practical performance.
Unit 1: Written examination, 2 hour paper 60% of AS Marks, 30% A Level marks
Unit 2: Internal examination/external moderation: 40% AS Marks, 20% A Level marks
Unit 3: Written examination 2 hour paper 30% of A Level marks
Unit 4: Internal assessment and external moderation 20% of A Level marks
Progression / Careers
Having achieved the A Level you can either seek employment or go onto Higher Education. We offer sports related Foundation Degree courses here at North Devon College. Students who combine studies with a good standard of sports performance and academic achievement will have the potential to access excellent opportunities at Higher Education institutions such as Bath, Loughborough, Marjons (University College Plymouth, St Mark and ST John), UWIC (University of Wales Institute, Cardiff) - Establishments that are renowned for their Sport related expertise.
