Is it right for me?
This one year course will introduce and develop skills in blacksmithing and welding and give a good introduction to the world of working with metals. The NPTC Certificate in Forgework includes production of a series of test pieces and a 1.5 hour external examination. The course also includes the NVQ 1 or 2 (depending on experience) in Performing Engineering Operations which allows practical welding skills in manual metal arc and gas to be developed and assessed. A final craft item is produced and shown at the College Open Day.

What qualifications will I need?
Five GCSE grades at D/E which must include Design Technology. Mature candidates should contact the course tutor to discuss the entry requirements.

What is involved?
Study at Kingston Maurward College 3 days a week with an emphasis on practical skills development. Key Skills in Communication, Application of Number and IT will be developed ' the level will depend on previous achievement. The course consists of lectures, demonstrations, practical instruction, industrial visits and farm practicals.

Where will it take me?
Further training or working within the welding, farriery, blacksmithing and fabrication industries.

What materials are required?
Practical clothing, overalls, waterproofs, steel toe'capped safety boots, basic stationery including a calculator. Tetanus protection is recommended.
