About this course

You will need at least 2 grade Ds at GCSE. You will need an interest in care and working with the general public. You will have to pass an enhanced CRB check to take part in the work placement. The College will subsidise this, but you may be asked to make a contribution towards the cost.

Health and Social Care BTEC First Diploma
This is a practical, work related course that will appeal to students who want to go on to further study or work in the care sector. There is also a compulsory work placement.

What will I study?
You will take 2 core units:
  • Communication and Individual Rights in the Health and Social Care Sectors
  • Individual Needs within the Health and Social Care Sectors

You will also take 4 specialist units which may include:
  • Vocational Experience in a Health or Social Care Setting
  • Anatomy and Physiology for Health and Social Care
  • Human Lifespan Development
  • Anatomy and Physiology


How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed through practical projects and assignments throughout the course.

What can I do next?
On successful completion of the course you will have a qualification which is equivalent to 4 GCSEs at grades A-C. With further training or study you could go on to a career in areas such as residential care or teaching support. You may wish to go on to study the Double AS, GCE Health and Social Care course or other Level 3 qualifications available at Longley Park Sixth Form College such as the CACHE Diploma in Childcare and Education or the Diploma in Society Health and Development (the SHD Diploma will require at least 5 GCSEs at C or above).
