You do not need to have studied ICT at GCSE to take this course. If you have taken ICT at GCSE you will have a good starting point from which to begin your A level studies. Access to a computer at home may be helpful, but it is not essential.

Information and Communication Technology AS/A2
This course will appeal to students who are interested in how computer systems fit into organisations and how they are developed, administered and managed. You will gain valuable skills in the advanced use of business software packages, as well as developing a systematic and logical approach to problem solving. Information and Communications Technology A level will complement a wide range of other subjects.

Students will have access to the latest in IT resources, both for lessons and for private study.

What will I study?
This course will develop your practical skills. It will also give you an understanding of ICT systems and the theoretical knowledge to solve problems using ICT. During the course you will look at key areas such as the nature and role of information, management information systems, database design techniques, networks and the capabilities and impact of the internet.

AS: The first year introduces you to the use of generic applications, the management and manipulation of data and systems administration. You will also produce a piece of coursework based on a case study and problem solving.

A2: The second year builds on the skills and knowledge learned at AS and looks at areas such as the role of information systems within organisations, information management and the use of information systems for problem solving. You will also produce a system for a real life client, including design, testing and user documentation.

How will I be assessed?
AS: A coursework project documenting the solution to a task using advanced features of an application for a specific user, plus 2 written examinations at the end of year one.

A2: A coursework project documenting the analysis and development of an information system for a specific user, plus 2 written examinations at the end of year two.

What can I do next?
Information and Communication Technology is an extremely useful A Level which can be used as the basis for further study, whether you wish to specialise in ICT or go on to study another subject. The skills gained on the course also make students very employable in professional areas, particularly in organisations that extensively use IT.
