What will I study?
AS Units
Unit G040: Using ICT to Communicate. An investigation into communication methods and technologies and the analysis of a range of documents. The use of various software packages to generate a variety of documents from business letters to presentations.
Unit G041: How organisations use ICT. Organisational structures in business, how various departmental functions are carried out within an organisation, legislation applying to ICT and how ICT plays a part in the running of a typical business. A particular organisation is examined as a case study. Pre-release tasks are carried out which are used as part of an examination on the case study and general aspects of ICT.
Unit G042: ICT solutions for individuals and society. An investigation into the effects of the access to electronic information on society and organisations. Researching a topic primarily using Internet search engines & digital methods, analysing data from local and on-line databases, presenting information using spreadsheet facilities and reporting results.
A2 Units
Unit G053 Developing and Creating Websites. Evaluation of website designs. The design, implementation and testing of a website using Dreamweaver and associated software.
Unit G049 Numerical Modelling of a System using Spreadsheets. Investigation of current working practices for a specific problem. The specification, design, implementation and testing of a spreadsheet using Excel and associated software.
Unit G048 Working to a Brief. Planning and monitoring the progress of an ICT project. Formal methods will be used including structured mind maps, activity lists & Gantt charts. A diary/log of progress is maintained and used in the evaluations. This unit is carried out in conjunction with either the website or spreadsheet unit.
Assessment
AS: Two units assessed by portfolio of coursework; one unit assessed by pre-release tasks & an examination relating to a case study.
A2: Three units assessed by portfolio. of coursework.
Useful supporting courses
Any other subjects, particularly business related. ICT is not usually taken at the same time as Computing, as this may affect the choice of university courses open to you. Students should bear in mind that ICT is very much course work oriented and they might find that the workload is excessive if it is taken with other coursework based subjects.
