Working with animals is a truly rewarding career and this exciting course offers you the opportunity to develop your interest and skills in caring for a wide variety of animals and their varying environments while preparing you for employment or progression on to further courses.
What qualifications will I need?
Four GCSEs at Grade D or above (including English Language, Science and Maths) or a First Certificate/Diploma in Animal Care at Merit or Distiction level and GCSE English Language and Science Grade D. A genuine interest in animals, willingness to learn and the ability to cope with written work in a classroom environment.
What will I be learning about?
Four core units:
- Animal health and wellbeing
- Feeding and watering animals
- Work related experience in the land based sector
- Safe working with and around animals
Seven additional units:
- Introduction to animal science
- Animal housing
- Animal behaviour and handling
- Small business practices in the land based sector
- Kennel and cattery husbandry
- Horse care
- Care of small animals and birds
- Functions skills: English, Maths and ICT
What is involved?
A one year course at Kingston Maurward consisting of lectures, demonstrations, practical work and visits. Four days at College with one day a week during the whole academic year for work experience at an animal care related organisation.
Where will it take me?
An ideal introductory course to a career working in pet shops, animal sanctuaries, dog kennels, catteries, horse stables, RSPCA and welfare organisations.
What else does the course include?
- NVQ Level 1 Animal Care
- Estate Skills Unit
- Key / basic skills.
What materials are required?
Practical clothing is necessary at all times, and includes steel toe'capped safety boots, waterproofs and overalls for all practical work. KMC polo shirts and sweatshirts are available and can be purchased at College.
Basic stationery.
Tetanus protection is recommended.
