Course Content

The course aims to develop student's creative and technical skills to enable them to gain employment within the field of fashion. Students are encouraged to be independent, inquiring and capable of responding to set projects and developing self initiated work. Course content includes fashion design and illustration, textile and surface decoration, pattern cutting and construction and fashion photography and styling. Throughout the course students will visit galleries, trade fairs and exhibitions within the U.K and abroad. Live projects and competitions form an important part of the course

Course Features

Students have access to well equipped work studio with industrial machinery and spacious pattern cutting areas. Students all have designated individual work spaces.

The department houses the Gerber Shared Technology Resource Centre. The commercial centre works with garment and textile companies providing valuable links. Students access the centre for workshops throughout the course giving them skills which are very much in demand within industry. The centre has recently acquired laser welding joining technology for the production of wearable technology. This technology is the only one of its kind in Europe.

Students participate in National competitions.

Regular visits to exhibitions, galleries and trade fairs are integrated into the course along with international visits to places such as New York.

Final year students exhibit their work at an end of year fashion show and exhibition.
Career Prospects and Progression

The course provides an excellent basis for progression to higher education. Careers directly related to fashion include; fashion design, textile design, accessories, marketing, promotion, styling, and visual merchandising.

Modules

The National Diploma course is made up of 18 units, five of which are core units, three compulsory and ten specialist units. They are; Drawing Development, Historical and Contextual Understanding, Materials Techniques and Processes, Ideas and Concepts, Visual Communication. Compulsory; Art and Design Exploration, Art and Design Application, Art and Design Realisation. Specialist; Design Methods, Design Principals, Pattern Construction, Production Techniques, Fashion Visualisation, Pattern Development, Fashion Presentation Techniques, Exploring Textiles, Surface Pattern, Personal and Professional development.

Method of Assessment

The course is continuously assessed and will include assignments and practical work.
