Is it right for me?
If you want to work with horses, then this is the course for you. It is structured to allow you different routes into the equine industry.

The course offers an excellent balance between theory and practical based learning. It is a two year course and is equivalent to 3 A levels which can lead to entry into Higher Education.

British Horse Society training is offered as an integral part of your course and when you have reached the appropriate level, half your exam fees will be paid by the College. This exciting new inclusion ensures you will leave Kingston Maurward College with internationally recognised qualifications.
Work experience is included in both years. This allows you the opportunity to gain valuable experience with a wide range of specialist work providers. Many students have secured jobs through their work experience.

What qualifications will I need?
Four GCSEs at Grade C or above including Maths, English and Science and one other subject, or a First Diploma in Horse Care at Distinction level.

What will I be learning about?
Year 1 consists of units which ensure you have good understanding of basic horse care:
  • Horse husbandry
  • Stable skills
  • Riding and training on the flat
  • Theory of equitation
  • Animal health
  • BHS Stage 1 training

Year 2 includes a study tour and organising your own show and has more specialist units to assist you in achieving your career goals:
  • Equestrian teaching
  • Competition grooming
  • Event management
  • BHS Stage 2 training

Training and exam fees for Riding & Road Safety are also included in year 2 and are a requirement prior to taking BHS stage 2.

What is involved?
Lectures and practical sessions at Kingston Maurward, plus work experience on our yard. Study tour, guest speakers, visits to a variety of equestrian establishments.

Where will it take me?
A responsible and challenging career in the equine industry, for example as riding instructor or yard supervisor in the UK or abroad. Mounted Armed Forces. Racing industry. With further training a variety of therapeutic careers are attainable.

What else does the course include?
  • First Aid at Work,
  • Safe Use of Veterinary Medicines.
  • Various BHS tests and exams.

What materials are required?
We have a strict uniform and equipment policy ' the uniform can be viewed on our website enabling you to purchase the required items before the start of your course. Basic stationery. Plaiting equipment and trimming scissors are essential.

What is next?
  • Foundation Degree in Equine Behaviour and Welfare.
  • Work based learning opportunities.
