What will I be learning?

The BTEC National Diploma is equivalent to three A levels and is studied on a full-time basis over two years. Completing this course will equip you with the skills and knowledge associated with recording techniques; the creative use of software packages (such as Logic, Reason & Pro Tools), composition, self-promotion & marketing, music business and law. You will have access to the College's music production facilities and have the opportunity to develop skills in multimedia/music video.

The National Diploma consists of 18 units of study; five core and twelve specialist units.

Core: Creating and Marketing a Music Product (double value unit); Listening Skills for Musicians; Sound Recording Techniques; Planning a Music Recording; The Sound and Music Industry.

Specialist: Analogue and Digital Audio Principles; Audio Engineering; Computer Music Systems; Introduction to Acoustics; Music and Society; Music and Sounds for Multimedia; Music Sequencing; Operating Live Sound; Pop Music in Practice; Sound Creation and Manipulation; Special Subject Investigation; The Music Freelance World. You will undertake key skills in Communication, Level 2.

How will I learn?

In each unit you will be given assignments designed to achieve clear learning outcomes which will then be graded at Pass, Merit and Distinction level. Work is applied to specific work related situations or activities, providing relevant scenarios for developing ideas often with opportunities for teamwork and in-depth study. Later in the course you will have a Final Major Project to pull together which confirms your knowledge and understanding across the programme.

What else might I want to know?

You may be required to provide or purchase some media storage materials such as CDs and a pair of headphones and adaptors.

This course is designed for any students who want to study the aspects of audio engineering, music production, and working in a studio environment.

There will be a Eighty Pounds materials fee which will be paid at enrolment. You can apply for funding to help with this cost if applicable.

What can I do afterwards?

The BTEC National Diploma will prepare you for direct entry into employment or for progression to Higher Education.
