ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Applicants will have the following entry requirements and attended a successful interview with satisfactory references providing information on behaviour, punctuality and attendance:

Minimum Initial Assessment level in Literacy Entry Level 3 and Numeracy Entry Level 3;
GCSE English Grade D, GCSE's Grade A-E Maths;
Good communication skills;
Proven record of excellent attendance and punctuality;
5 days work experience in a salon;
Have good manual dexterity skills (i.e. an ability to work with their hands.

Applicants will also need to have a Starter kit if the full kit is not available at the start of course.
PROGRAMME CONTENT/STRUCTURE
This course is suitable for students who wish to develop the foundation skills needed in hairdressing for a successful career within the industry. The course will involve both practical and theory classes. During the practical lessons, students will be working in a realistic salon environment, learners will be expected to carry out hairdressing services on clients once they have reached a certain level of ability. Students will be required to carry out four weeks work experience activities during their studies. As clients for all courses cannot be guaranteed, students may need to provide their own clients.

In addition to studying Adult Literacy the subjects covered will include:

Develop Effective Working Relationships;
Health and Safety;
Prepare for Services and Maintain Working Area;
Salon Reception; and
Shampoo and Condition Hair.


PROGRESSION/CAREERS OPPORTUNITIES
On successful completion of this course students can progress onto NVQ Level 2 in Hairdressing or choose to find employment in the Hairdressing industry at junior level. Learner to meet the following targets:
Obtain required initial assessment level
A minimum of 80% attendance within 2 terms
Completed 4 weeks work experience with a positive reference
Complete Level 1 qualification
Obtain 80% attendance of basic keyskills lessons for minimum of 2 terms.


ASSESSMENT STRUCTURE This is gained through observed practical, oral and written assessment that will be ongoing throughout the duration of the programme. Students will be expected to collect relevant evidence through witness testimony projects and assignments towards their portfolio. Where students may be able to provide evidence of prior learning and experience which can be accredited.
EXCURSIONS / WORK EXPERIENCE There will be a minimum of one subject related visit during the year which is part of your course and therefore compulsory. There will also be opportunities to enter competitions and it is expected that all students will take part in these activities. 2 weeks of work experience will be part of the programme.
READING LISTS Recommended text books to be advised during induction. A suitable lever arch file and paper with dividers will be needed.
