NVQ 1 in Hairdressing

This course is designed by the Hairdressing Training Board and Edexcel to give young people the skills needed to progress on to the Level 2 programme, or to assist in a salon context.

What will I be doing?

• shampooing and conditioning of hair
• support salon reception duties
• effective working relationships
• health and safety in the salon
• prepare for hairdressing services and maintain work areas
• contribute to perming, relaxing and colouring processes

How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed through coursework. There are two written test papers as well as practical tasks which will be observed while working in the salon. You will be required to work on reception and you will also be assessed in your customer service skills. You must be prepared to work in a team and follow salon procedures to pass all assessments.

Where do I go from here?
You can go on to do the NVQ Level 2 Hairdressing qualification or begin work at a salon junior level.

Entry requirements
Four GCSEs at grade E. You will need to demonstrate a genuine interest in pursuing a career in the hairdressing industry. You must have basic skills in reading, writing and speaking English, and be able to complete simple calculations. You will be required to purchase your own specialist equipment (further details available at interview).
