Is it right for me?
Ideal for those who are serious about starting a career in outdoor adventure. This course also offers a constructive opportunity for students taking a year out before entering Higher Education. Relatively little time is spent in the classroom and the emphasis is on practical work to develop leadership skills, organisational abilities and land and water'based activities. From Easter the course continues in the work place at an outdoor adventure centre, in the UK or France, where you will be employed on the same conditions as other staff while gaining an invaluable season leading outdoor adventure.

What qualifications will I need?
Enthusiasm. Reasonable level of experience in a range of outdoor pursuits. A proven commitment to working with young people. The ability to work independently and as part of a group. Either BCU 2 Star or RYA Level 2 dinghy sailing. Minimum four GCSEs at Grade E, including English. Must be at least 18 years old.

  • BCU Foundation Safety and Rescue Training
  • BCU Personal Skills Awards
  • RYA Dinghy Sailing Award (With the opportunity to achieve a RYA or BCU Instructor Award.)

What is involved?
24 weeks at Kingston Maurward plus 14 weeks working in an outdoor adventure centre.

Where will it take me?
Employable as a multi'activity instructor. Work within recreation and holiday industries where the ability to organise groups is a key requirement.

What materials are required?
Appropriate outdoor clothing. Technical equipment (if owned)

How will I be assessed?
Practically and through an evidence based portfolio for the NVQ, evidence based portfolio and multi choice test for Key Skills and practically plus logbook experience for the NGB Industry Qualifications.
