The Course
The BTEC First Diploma in Travel and Tourism is an internationally recognised qualification. It is equivalent to four GCSEs at grades A C.

Course Content
The course consists of three core units plus three specialist units.

Core Units:

• The UK Travel and Tourism Industry
• Exploring Customer Service in Travel and Tourism
• UK Travel and Tourism Destinations

Specialist Units: (three units to be chosen by the tutor):

• European Holiday Destinations
• Exploring Marketing in Travel and Tourism
• Business Skills for Travel and Tourism
• Developing Employability Skills for Travel and Tourism
• Planning Visits for Travel and Tourism

Each unit is taught separately using a variety of methods e.g. case studies, group work, individual tasks, presentations, videos, discussion, visits, etc. The individual tutor will decide on the most appropriate method of delivery to meet the Learning Outcomes set by the examining body (Edexcel). There will be regular tutorials to check progress and identify any problem areas. Some tutorials will be on a one-to-one basis (one tutor, one student), and some will be with the group as a whole. Learning Support is available to those who feel they need assistance with written work (grammar, report writing, essay writing, etc). Learning Support is offered on a one-to-one basis, and usually takes place once a week.
Alongside the Travel and Tourism course, we will be developing the following Functional Skills:

• IT
• Communication
• Application of Number

We offer all students who have not previously achieved Functional Skills the opportunity to gain certificates in these areas. This involves producing a small portfolio of work (usually related to your coursework) and sitting a multi-choice test (approx. one hour).

Assessment/Exams
The course is assessed through a programme of assignments using a variety of assessment methods which may take many different forms e.g. written work, presentations, discussions, meetings. The students work is continually assessed throughout the year.

Progression/Career Path
On completion of a BTEC First Diploma, students can obtain work in the Travel and Tourism industry in careers such as Tour Operators, Airlines, Cruise Lines or Travel Agents. They can also move on to a BTEC National Certificate in Travel and Tourism.

Qualifications Required
Four GCSEs at grade D-G or Level 1 qualification with tutor recommendation or Foundation Diploma in a relevant subject.
