Course programme
Candidates applying for the first time under this scheme will undertake this initial assessment. Only candidates who are renewing their assessments under this scheme may be eligible for the re-assessment.
Individuals should contact us for advice if they are unsure of their category or the requirements relating to it.
There is a mandatory requirement to be eligible to take this first assessment.
Category 1 operatives must submit their previous gas certification.
Category 2 operatives - are required to obtain employment with a gas registered business that is willing to provide an extended period of company 'in house' gas training and organisation support prior to taking the assessment.
Applicants must provide evidence that they hold qualifications demonstrating competence in work activities associated with fossil fuelled appliances/equipment and/or pipe work installation i.e. plumbing craft qualification or S/NVQ, pipe fitter/welder craft qualification or S/NVQ, heating and ventilation craft qualification or S/NVQ or refrigeration engineer craft qualification or S/NVQ.
If the applicant is self-employed then the on-the-job gas training must be evidenced by way of a portfolio.
Category 3 operatives are new entrants to the gas industry and have no relevant qualifications or experience.
These applicants must again seek employment with a gas registered business to undertake On-the-job gas training and must evidence the training by way of a portfolio whether they are employed with the company or self-employed. The number of days to be evidenced will be double that of a Category 2 applicant.
This takes approximately 2.5 days, but depending on experience and skills this could be done in 1.5 days.
However, no time limit is set and 3 days is a guideline.
The scheme comprises of a number of gas-safety related assessments. Each assessment is subdivided into elements that reflect the competence that an individual is required to demonstrate in accordance with the assessment criteria. The assessment(s) require an individual to complete practical and/or written assessments. Where necessary individuals will be asked oral questions by the assessor.
In all cases, a 100% pass mark must be achieved, but this can be done over 3-4 attempts.
100% pass rate over the previous six years.
