What will I study?
The AS level course consists of three units, each concerned with the exploration of practical techniques and the production of original images:
1 Coursework: Natural and Man-Made Form
2 Coursework: Investigating Time
3 Controlled Test (exam board directed): a practical project of personal interest which must be completed in a specified timescale.
The A2 level course provides the opportunity for students to extend their skills and practice further, developing a personal and critical approach to image production. Again there are three units studied:

7 Controlled Test (exam board directed): a practical project of personal interest which must be completed in a specified timescale.

Where will I study?

The campus has a prime location on Gateshead quayside, and state-of-the-art facilities including a Jacuzzi, gym and sauna, a 200 seat theatre, state-of-the-art classrooms, training kitchen and restaurant, refectory, bistro and vending areas.

Assessment
Evidence for assessment will be based on the assignment work completed for each unit. In grading the work equal weighting (25%) will be placed on the following four assessment objectives:
AO1 record observations, experiences, ideas, information and insights in visual and other forms, appropriate to intentions;
AO2 analyse and evaluate critically sources such as images, objects, artefacts and texts, showing understanding of purposes, meanings and contexts;
AO3 develop ideas through sustained investigations and exploration, selecting and using materials, processes and resources, identifying and interpreting relationships and analysing methods and outcomes;
AO4 present a personal, coherent and informed response, realising intentions, and articulating and explaining connections with the work of others.
All units are assessed by centre staff and externally moderated by AQA.

How will I be taught?
Students will explore the nature and practice of Photography through the creation of images created by digital and chemical (silver-based) means, and by a combination of the two. The relationship of photography with other Art and Design media may also be a focus for study.
Through individually negotiated project work, supported by lectures and practical demonstrations, students will investigate a range of photographic genres, eg:
Portraiture, documentary and/or photo-journalism.
Landscape photography (responses to the natural or man-made environment).
Working from objects, still life or from the natural world.
Experimental imagery.
It is important that students of Photography develop an appreciation of the medium within the wider contexts of Art and Design and the variety of communication roles it fulfils in society. Gallery/museum visits to enhance the understanding of the work of other artists, designers and craftspeople are important and students are encouraged to keep diaries and sketchbooks to develop their own personal responses to themes and topics. This is a practical based course which can be time demanding but the personal creativity is very stimulating and rewarding for all those involved.
