Subject category:
Earth Sciences

What will I study?
Geology is the branch of science concerned with the structure, evolution and dynamics of the Earth. It looks at topics such as plate tectonics, minerals, energy resources, rock forming processes, geological time and geological hazards.

Duration:
One year for AS Level, two years for A2.

Do I need any additional qualifications/ skills?
You need to have good analytical and problem solving skills. As Geology involves much practical work and fieldwork, an interest and ability in these areas is useful.

How will I be assessed?
For both the AS and A2 examinations there is a good variety of assessment styles, including data response, essays, practical work and fieldwork. AS Unit 1: 35% of AS, 17.5% of A Level. Structured and data response questions Unit 2: 30% of AS, 15% of A Level. A practical based exercise Unit 3: 35% of AS, 17.5% of A Level. Structured data response questions and an essay. A2 Unit 4: 17.5% of A Level. Integrated structured questions Unit 5: 17.5% of A Level Structured data response and an essay for each of 2 themes Unit 6: 15% of A Level 2 geological investigations (fieldwork and laboratory).

What can I do afterwards?
The majority of students who take AS Geology choose to continue studying the subject to A2. Geology is an accepted science subject for higher education entry and as such it is a gateway to the wide variety of careers available to science graduates. It is not unusual for 80% of our Geology students to progress onto Earth Science related degree courses. The subject is of direct relevance to those interested in careers in oil and gas exploration, mining, civil engineering, hydrogeology, environmental geology, geophysics and geochemistry.

Are there any additional costs involved?
Fieldwork is carried out locally in conjunction with the coursework and may be offered further a field on a residential basis for which there is a charge. Places visited include the Lake District, Iceland, Shropshire, Dorset and Pembrokeshire. You are required to buy the course textbook (Geosciences by Edwards and King) for which you should allow £30.
