German Absolute Beginners level 1
Your Course
This course will suit beginners who have no previous knowledge of German. The aim of the course is to develop your ability to understand and respond to spoken and written German. It will help you to communicate effectively in authentic situations, such as in restaurants, hotels and shops. It will help you to ask for information in various contexts, to respond to people and talk about yourself, your family, your work and your leisure. The focus of the course is on conversation and you will learn a little basic grammar so that you can begin to manipulate the language. You will develop the listening skill to understand what people say and gradually be ready to cope with the unexpected. You will be encouraged to build up your own vocabulary lists and to practise between lessons.
The course book "Talk German" (BBC) provides the structure for this introductory 10 week course.
This course feeds into Beginners Level 2 (summer 2010) and then Beginners Level 3 (autumn 2010).
During this course you will take a short internal assessment in reading German at Beginners level. This will help to prepare you for the OCR ASSET language test that will be taken at the end of the first year of study.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the 10 week course you will have been given the opportunity to:
· Develop your understanding of German through listening to recordings of native speakers
· Carry out social interaction in German in a variety of situations, for example: buying a rail ticket, shopping, in a cafe, booking a hotel room
· Read simple notices, signs and information
