This short course explores some of the major issues that pose challenges to the global balance of power: transnational terrorism, the environment, human and energy security issues, migration, inequality & underdevelopment, and the state's role in a 'globalising' world. Tutor: Dale Mineshima-Lowe.

About this course

- Explain one of the key challenges to dealing with global issues- Identify one aspect of the relationship between human security issues and transnational terrorism- Identify two key challenges of underdevelopment and inequality.

Lectures, small group work/discussions, larger class discussions will be supplemented by video, articles and other sourced reading materials (including governmental and advocacy group reports, etc.). You will gain more from the course, in terms of enjoyment and learning, if you are able and willing to do some supplementary reading outside of class meetings and participate in in-class discussions. You may also have the opportunity to explore more resources for discussion in classroom-based activities – including possible use of computers during in-class small group work.

** For those learners who would like to familiarise themselves with the topic in general before the course begins, An Introductory Text on International Relations is recommended below: (it short, inexpensive and provides coverage of a good number and range of topics). Learners already familiar with the topic area may also find it a useful re-fresher before the start of the course.
