The aim of this module is to promote professional competence within hand therapy, whilst considering the evidence base for specific aspects of practical hand therapy such as technique and modality selection. We've developed this practically based module in collaboration with the British Association of Hand Therapists.
About this course
On completion of this course you should be able to:
Develop knowledge and practical skills in various aspects of practical hand therapy.
Demonstrate clinical reasoning for a variety of treatment techniques/interventions used in the specialist clinical field of hand therapy.
Critically evaluate the effectiveness of a practical hand therapy intervention
Occupational therapy, physiotherapy
an undergraduate degree (at least 2:2) or a diploma in occupational therapy or physiotherapy, or an equivalent qualification;
an English Language GCSE grade C or equivalent;
You’ll also need to currently work in the clinical field of hand therapy.

Course programme
About this module
The module involves attendance at a five day summer school, which will include demonstration and participation in many aspects of practical hand therapy. This will include:
- Splinting – principles of static and dynamic splinting
- Treatment techniques used to reduce oedema e.g. coban wrapping,
- Treatment techniques used in the management of
- sensory disturbance
- stiffness
- pain e.g. complex regional pain syndrome
- Patient education
