The BA Health and Social Care responds to the blurring of boundaries between health and social care in recent years as vulnerable people are increasingly supported within their own homes and communities by a range of agencies and practitioners working in partnership.

The course is designed to equip the future workforce to meet the challenges raised by such changes.

Firstly, the course provides a sound knowledge base in the social, organisational, legal and policy contexts of health and social care. It also offers opportunities for specialist study in particular service or client areas, such as health education, mental health, children and families, older and disabled people.

Secondly, the course seeks to develop students’ personal, professional and study skills, and specialist skills in conducting social research.

Thirdly, it offers the opportunity to develop practice-related skills in such areas as interdisciplinary working, equal opportunities and working with diversity and difference.

The BA Health and Social care attracts students from traditional and non-traditional backgrounds, and staff have a track record in delivering friendly, accessible and effective teaching and study support.

The curriculum is delivered through lectures, seminars, workshops and personal tutoring to ensure that students both receive individual guidance and begin to forge an identity as part of an award programme.

At Levels 2 and 3 the emphasis moves progressively towards more independent forms of learning with the more extensive use of self-directed case studies, reports and project work.

At the same time, students are fully supported throughout the course by detailed documentation and written guidance, available both in printed form and through the University’s virtual learning environment, Blackboard as well as through individual tutorials, drop in sessions and ‘e-tutorials’.
