About this course

You will have at least 4 GCSEs at grade C. At least THREE must be from : English Language or Literature/Humanities (History,Geography,RS,Sociology,Psychology)/Business/Science (Core and Additional OR triple)/Maths. Alternatively you will have a DISTINCTION in a Level 2 Diploma OR an NVQ2 OR a CACHE Cert.

Health and Social Care (Health Studies) BTEC National Diploma
This course has been developed to recognise learners' skills, knowledge and understanding of the health, social care and early years sector and the settings, job roles, principles and values involved.

What does the course involve?
You will carry out a range of tasks that have been designed to recognise your achievements in a modern, practical way that is relevant to the workplace. You will develop skills, knowledge and understanding in contexts that are directly relevant to employment situations, thereby enhancing your employability within the health, social care and early years sector.

What will I study?
Core Unit - Developing Effective Communication in Health and Social Care This unit offers learners opportunities to explore and develop the skills of effective interpersonal interaction and communication essential to the operation of health and social care services.

Core Unit - Equality, Diversity and Rights in Health and Social Care This unit investigates how equality, diversity and rights are central to the effective operation of health and social care services. It explores discriminatory practice and its potential effects on patients and service users, the promotion of anti-discriminatory practice by, for example, legislation and codes of practice, and application of this to the health or social care workplace.

Core Unit - Development Through the Life Stages This unit enables learners to gain an understanding of the different life stages and how people grow and develop.

Core Unit - Fundamentals of Anatomy and Physiology for Health and Social Care This unit aims to provide learners with a clear understanding of fundamental aspects of the anatomy and physiology of human body systems.

Core Unit - Caring for Children and Young People The aim of this unit is to introduce learners to the care of children and young people, aged from birth to 18 years old, who need to be looked after. It also provides an introduction to the sensitive issue of the risks of abuse to children and young people, the strategies that can minimise the risk of such abuse occurring, and how to handle situations of suspected abuse.

Core Unit - Public Health This unit aims to develop understanding of the role of public health systems, their origin and development, and the range of key groups in influencing public health policy.

Specialist Units A range of specialist units will be studied, covering a variety of interesting and relevant areas, for example: Health Education, Complimentary Therapies, Introduction to Counselling Skills, Caring for Older People, Health Psychology.
