The course will focus on Muslim societies in modern times. Issues related to the reception of modern ideas and
institutions, the status of traditional practices, debates around nation-state, democracy and gender as well as
questions about identity, globalisation and extremism will be discussed in their due historical contexts.

Lecture, discussion, videos, slides. There are no necessary costs, although further reading will be suggested. You may want to bring a pen and paper for any notes you may want to take during the class sessions.
