Why should I study Human Physiology & Health?
The course is a one-year course designed specifically to meet the needs of post-16 students. The College follows the Foundation Level Syllabus which leads to GCSE grades C to G. You may wish to take this course in order to improve a current GCSE Science grade or to acquire a Biology/Science qualification required for an intended career or HE course.
What will I study?
The course covers 3 main themes:
- Relations between Man, other Organisms and Environment
- Organisation and Maintenance of the Individual
- Reproduction, growth and development
Topics covered:
- Cells, tissues, organs and skin
- Respiration and breathing
- Nutrition and digestion
- Blood and circulation
- Disease and Immunity
- Drugs
- Healthy food and water
- The skeleton and movement
- Excretion and the kidney
- Sensitivity and coordination
- Hormones and homeostasis
- Food chains, webs and pollution
- Human reproduction
- Genetics and variation
What skills do I need?

How will I be taught?
Your lessons will involve learning new information using a variety of resources including:

The key information is recorded on â€-summary sheets' which form the basic notes for your revision.
How is the course assessed?
Practical coursework counts for 20% and there is a final 2 hr written exam counting for 80%. You will be entered for the Foundation Paper (grades G to C).
In exceptional circumstances you could attempt the Higher Paper but this would require attendance at additional teaching sessions and individual study.
What will this course prepare me for?
On successful completion of the course there is also the opportunity to progress to AS and A Level courses in Biology at college.

As an approximate guideline AS subjects require 3-4 hrs of independent study each; A2 subjects 4-5 hrs each and GCSE subjects 2 hrs each.
