Course description If you'd like to advance onto a university degree in a Humanities, Teaching, English or History based subjects, but don't have the necessary qualifications yet, then this Access to Humanities and Careers in Education course will help keep your options open and give you just what you to need to apply for a higher level programme. During this yearlong course, you'll focus on a wide range of humanities-based subjects, to develop the essential skills that universities and future employers look for. You'll have the chance to flex your creative muscle writing poetry and fiction, explore the history of the world from Classical Greece through to Hitler's rise to power, and learn how to effectively analyse a range of materials, including Shakespeare's plays, novels, and text books. The course is incredibly varied with a number of units to choose from, but whichever path you take, you'll be preparing yourself for a rewarding further education at university, building invaluable abilities such as writing academic essays, critical analysis, and writerly authority.

3. Entry requirements To enrol on this Access to Higher Education Diploma, you'll need to have GCSEs in both English and Mathematics at grade C or above. If you'd like to advance into primary education, you will also need at least a C grade in GCSE Science, and it's advisable to have formal classroom experience. Please be advised that you are able to study GCSE Biology at The Manchester College alongside your Access course. If you'd like to start preparing now for the course, and for subsequent university applications, there are a few things you can do to put yourself in the best possible position. It's helpful to get as much relevant experience as you can, so you could start submitting poems and stories to writing competitions, volunteering at local libraries or museums, applying for editing roles at magazines and online publications, or even practicing as a book critic! For anyone wishing to go into teaching or education, we'd advise you to get some formal experience before the start of the access course, such as in the classroom, with youth groups, coaching, mentoring schemes, summer schools, or in brownies, rainbows, beavers or cubs! This will support the requirements needed for a strong university application and help to ensure you make the most of this course. If you would like to focus on teaching and education, you may want to read up on the QTS Skills Test too, a requirement for all trainee teachers. 4. Equipment required No equipment required 5. Assessment method You'll be assessed continuously throughout this Access to Humanities and Careers in Education Diploma. This will include academic essays, projects, presentations, seminars and exams. Access to Higher Education Diplomas are intensive programmes of study, and will require you to balance a number of assignments and deadlines simultaneously. You'll need 60 credits to obtain the Diploma, with each unit typically worth 3 credits. Universities will usually ask for at least 45 graded credits at either Pass/Merit/Distinction (or specific UCAS Tariff Points), in addition to the required GCSE qualifications and formal experience in the field/subject.
