Why study Physics?
Physics is the most fundamental and exciting of the experimental sciences in that it seeks to explain the basic features of the natural world. Our description of the workings of the Universe is based upon laws of Physics, which are tested by their agreement with objective reality through experiment. Due attention is also given to the social and historical aspects of Physics.
What will I learn?
The subject core introduces such topics as:
- Mechanics
- Thermal Physics Waves
- Electricity and Magnetism
- Atomic and Nuclear Physics
- Optics
- Astrophysics
Students will develop the following skills:
- Communication skills - describing concepts and ideas and presenting information
- Problem solving skills - applying mathematical skills and the laws of Physics to solve quantitative problems. Designing experiments to test hypotheses.
- Analytical skills - determining the true meaning behind sets of data.
- Experimental skills - using and manipulating equipment to make accurate and repeatable measurements.
- IT skills - word processing reports, research using the Internet, using spreadsheets to analyse and present data.
At both Higher and Standard level the subject is taught through a combination of theory and practical work. Wherever possible computers are used to carry out experiments, analyse data and support conceptual understanding.
What will I be able to do next?
These skills are increasingly useful in all professions. The Higher level International Baccalaureate is required for students wishing to study Physics or a related subject at university.
How will I be assessed?
The course is assessed through a combination of written papers and practical coursework. All practical work is continually assessed and accounts for 25% of the subject mark.
Additional information
You will be expected to buy a textbook, which will cost about £25.
