The course is about learning the processes and techniques to communicate ideas through image-making. You will be guided through the process of answering to a brief. You will learn to research a subject, generate and communicate ideas.You will be introduced to a variety of traditional and contemporary tools and techniques including collage, cut-outs, drawing, paint, 3D objects and digital and will evaluate the context in order to select the most appropriate. You will explore the relationship between text and image. You will be introduced to different approaches in visual story-telling. You will create a portfolio of work using a range of media and will learn about the tricks of setting up your own illustration practice.

develop some of the work outside the class. Homework will include research, idea and image development. Please note the City Lit uses Apple Mac computers in Digital arts, Graphics & Illustration and Photography. The course covers basic materials and equipment. It would be useful for you to have the following equipment at the first class: sketchbook of your choice, pens and pencils. You will be introduced to art materials, what you may find useful to have and where you could purchase those in the first class. It would be useful to bring a memory stick (or portable hard drive – please note PC formatted hard drives can be read by Apple mac computers, but not written to.) CDs/DVDs are available. If you would like to buy art materials for your personal use outside of the course, City Lit students receive 10% discount off everything* from Cass Art, the UK's leading art supplies retailer.
