Who is this course for?
A good course for the beginner to start with an introduction to complementary therapies.

What are the entry requirements?
You will be assessed on your English and Maths skills at interview. Good co-ordination skills are essential. There are additional costs with this course, applicant must contact course information centre for details.
After applying you will have an interview to determine which course is suitable for your needs and abilities.

Reading: You can read and summarise information by selecting and using different types of documents to obtain relevant information; skim and scan documents to gain a general idea of content and identify the information you need; recognise the writer's intentions and identify the main points, ideas and lines of reasoning; summarise information to suit your purpose. Interpret information: You can read and understand tables, charts, graphs and diagrams; read and understand numbers used in different ways; estimate amounts and proportions; make accurate observations and select appropriate methods to get the results you need. Carry out calculations: You can carry out calculations involving two or more steps, with numbers of any size, with and without a calculator; work with and convert between fractions, decimals and percentages; convert measurements between systems (e.g. pounds to kilograms); work out areas and volumes; work out dimensions from scale drawings; use proportions and calculate ratios where appropriate; compare sets of data of an appropriate size and use range to describe the spread within sets of data.

Diploma in Indian Head Massage

Where can it lead?
Employment in mobile therapy. It is possible to work in salons and spas just specialising in complementary and holistic therapies, but further training in these fields is useful.

What will I study?
Students will learn: how to assess clients for Indian head massage treatment, to carry out through consultations and effective aftercare and home-care advice, massage techniques for the back, shoulders, scalp and face, massage oils and their safe use, relaxation methods, anatomy and physiology of the head and neck, health & safety.

How will I be taught?
The college has a working beauty salon where students carry out treatments on paying members of the public. As well as individual treatments students will also carry out at least four case studies for clients which involve a course of four treatments on the same client and tracking the client's progress. To start with you would have to practice on each other before you progress to clients. You will have to wear college salon uniform and have short nails (not false). A kit would have to be bought for this course.

How will I be assessed?
Students carrying out treatments on the general public which is assessed by observation and oral questioning by their tutor and collection of evidence to build a portfolio of work. Students will have written tests throughout the year on all theory withing the course.

All non-NVQ courses are now externally assessed at certain times during the year - these are mandatory to pass the qualification. Some courses have two assessments.

External verification takes place at the end of the academic year (June) and any student on any course may be requested to attend (even if your course finished in the Spring term you may be called upon to attend the external verification visit). The process by which students are chosen to be assessed, during the external verification visit, is completely random and carried out by the External Verifier from VTCT. Those who are chosen will be notified as soon as possible during the Summer term. VTCT make this compulsory to attend - further details are printed in the course handbook.
