This module is designed to provide students with the opportunity to enhance their knowledge and skills of critical enquiry, and develop a systematic understanding and critical awareness when caring for the critically ill patient with multiple organ dysfunctions, level 3 patients.

To take this course you need to be working in an Intensive Care unit and be qualified for a minimum of 1 year, you will also need a supervisor to sign off your ITU competencies.

Course programme

What will this course cover?

Key indicative content areas include:

  • The holistic care and management of patients who are critically ill within the intensive care environment and suffering from a range of biochemical and physiological derangements.
  • Critical analysis of the critical care environment on the patient, family and carers.
  • Multi-disciplinary team working and its effects upon patient experiences.
  • The role of the critical care nurse in ethical decision making.
  • Analysis and exploration of technical skills within intensive care.
  • Exploration of the differing roles and responsibilities and of members of the multi-disciplinary team related to rehabilitative activities.
  • Exploration of political influences impacting upon patient care.

To pass the course you will need to complete an exam, an academic assignment and a booklet of ITU competencies.

How will I be taught and assessed?

A variety of teaching and learning strategies will be used such as case studies, lectures, seminars, critical reflection, competency based learning in practice and student presentations.
You will be expected to achieve core clinical competencies within your respective clinical area. In addition, it is normal for the employing trust to provide you with a suitably qualified mentor to work with the course team in supporting your learning in practice.
Assessment will consist of three parts: an examination, a reflective essay linked to a clinical competency document and a clinical competency document that will be completed while in clinical practice
