Introduction:
This is an advanced course that enables you to develop skills in the many different activities covered by the term `Interior Design`. It succussfully prepares you for employment or University application for BA Degree or HND courses in Interior Design related subjects. A BTEC National Certificate is a practical, work-related course valued by employers and higher education institutions. You learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands. As well as learning about the interior and spatial design industry, you will also develop the skills needed to start, or progress a career in this industry. This Advanced Level course is equivalent to two A Levels. It will be taught in specialist facilities at our multi-million pound Park Campus, which is a Centre of Excellence for creative arts.

Study Mode & Location:
This two year Part-Time+ course will be held at Preston College, Park Campus, Moor Park Avenue, Preston, PR1 6AP.

Course Content:
This course is ideal if you are intending to develop a freelance design practice or become employed in a design studio. The unique breadth and depth of this pre-degree programme enables us to enter you for additional advanced qualifications in Art & Design. Consequently it is not necessary for you to study extra A Level subjects from the college grid. This allows you to focus exclusively on your Art & Design work.

The course covers a broad and exciting range of topics including:

• Design Trends & Styles.
• Technical Drawing & Illustration Skills.
• Colour & Lighting.
• Decorative Materials.
• Spatial Planning.
• Computer Studies * Business Practice.
• Buildings measurement surveys.

There will be organised trips to see the latest and best in interior and architectural design.

During Year One you will:

• Learn basic drawing and observational skills.
• Study the historical development of Art & Design.
• Learn about colour, light and 3 dimensional design.
• Be provided with simple exercises to help you develop your ideas and gain confidence.
• Acquire information on materials and architectural interiors and learn how to use this information in your project work.
• Learn computer skills and basic studio practice to help you produce your design work in a professional way.
• Learn technical drawing skills including plans, elevation, axonometric and perspective.

Year Two continues with design projects, but will concentrate more on designing interiors for current trends in shops, cafes, restaurants and refits of existing buildings. There will be further concentration on improving your drawing and general presentation skills to help you complete an impressive portfolio of design work. If you become interested in a more specialist area, the course is structured to allow you to focus on that particular interest.

Assessment:
Coursework is internally assessed and externally moderated. There will also be a final project that is externally assessed. You will receive continuous feedback and advice during the course.

Careers & Progression Opportunities:
Most students progress to Interior Design through either employment, or university studies, but the course provides a broad design education, and we have enabled students to specialise in:

• Architecture
• Exhibition/Display Design.
• TV/Theatrical Set Design.
• Furniture Design.
• Building Studies.
• Computer Aided Design.

Additional Costs:
You will need to purchase course books and technical drawing equipment in the first two weeks of the course costing approx £100. Art materials and equipment costs vary, but you should expect to pay about £250 over the duration of the course.

How To Apply
You will need to complete a Further Education Application Form. These will be available from mid-May.
Many courses have limited places so please return your application form as soon as possible. Following acceptance of your application, the earliest you may enrol is mid-June.

Part-Time+ Course Benefits

Requirement
Students aged 16 to 18 will need to have 33 GCSE points including Grade C or above in English Language and an Art or Design subject. You will be asked to present a portfolio at the end of the induction project. Students aged 19 or over should have at least one of the following: BTEC First Certificate or Diploma in a related subject. Intermediate GNVQ in a related subject. At least four GCSEs at grades A*-C. Appropriate work experience. All students will be interviewed to assess their eligibility for the course, and will need to be seriously committed to a career in some aspect of Interior & 3 Dimensional Design.
