Course programme

International Baccalaureate (Group 6) Visual Arts Standard Level and Higher Level
The study of the Visual Arts provides students with the opportunity to develop a critical and intensely personal view of themselves in relation to the world.

What does the course consist of?
Students will be expected to demonstrate their growing commitment through the study of art and to make connections between their personal research and artistic production and outcomes on the course. Evidence will be in the form of two interlinked components, studio work and research notebooks. In both areas students will have demonstrated that they have the ability to inquire, synthesise and solve problems both visual and in written terms in order to produce work which demonstrates their imaginative and creative skills by the end of their course.
Individual research themes might be:
  • The roots and forms of graffiti
  • Artists' journeys
  • Rituals
  • Form, function and design stylistic revivals
  • The city environment
  • Still life
  • The figure
  • Portraiture
  • High art/low art in culture
Students can use practical studio work and research workbooks in painting, drawing, and lens based work, textile arts and installation to address core themes:
  • Artistic concepts and techniques developed through studio practice
  • Aesthetic qualities in Art
  • Form and meaning in Art
  • Social and cultural functions

What else do I need to know?
Students will work in their own area of study with the support and guidance of the teacher and with access and regular visits to local and national galleries and museums.
Students will be encouraged to connect social, cultural and aesthetic meaning to their own artistic practice through expression in various forms of artistic representation.
Students who wish to follow a career in Art and Design to degree level via a pre degree would be encouraged to follow A Level whereas the IB would be for students who wish for breadth and the option of Visual Arts 6 alongside other IB groups.
