This course uses the application Adobe Animate (previously known as Flash) to introduce you to the traditional and experimental techniques of drawn animation.

About this course

- Use the drawing tools in Animate CC
- Create drawn animations using keyframes
- Create animations using shape tweening to animate changes in shape
- Create animations using motion tweening to animate transformations
- Import video into Animate CC for reference and Rotoscoping
- Import sound and synch sound to animation in Animate CC
- Export animated sequences as QuickTime movies.

There are no additional costs. It may be useful to bring a memory stick or portable hard drive – please note PC-formatted hard drives can be read by Apple Mac computers, but not written to. You will be advised on how to use a free online storage drive if this is preferable.

You will be taught through a range of techniques including short lectures, demonstrations, practical exercises, group and individual assistance and hand-outs. Please note we will be using Apple Mac computers.
Homework might be set to inspire your work but is not compulsory.
It is recommended that to get the best out of the course you have the Adobe Animate CC software installed on your own computer to enable you to practise techniques outside of the lessons. You can download a trial version of the program, and may qualify for a student license of the software at a reduced price. Please check the Adobe website: to find out if you may be eligible.

Course programme

This practical course will guide you through the basic skills and techniques for creating effective animated sequences using Animate CC. You'll learn how to use the drawing tools and a Wacom graphics tablet to produce exciting hand-drawn animations. You'll get to grips with Animate CC symbols and different forms of tweening, and be introduced to some fundamentals of animation to enhance your work. You'll also learn about using and synching sound, and exporting your work as animated movies.

You can further develop your skills and interest in Animation through a range of City Lit courses in animation, cartooning, illustration, digital film and editing.
