The course is concerned with the history and development of cinema in Britain, Europe and the United States from its beginnings to the arrival of sound in around 1930. The course also explores a range of issues in the study of film.

About this course
• Describe and evaluate key issues in early film and cinema• Evaluate ways of thinking about early film, its audiences and spectatorship• Describe and evaluate the beginnings of narrative filmmaking and its impact on cinema• Describe the key features of early Hollywood (e.g., the classical style)• Evaluate a range of European film movements as alternatives to Hollywood and the classical style• Evaluate key debates around the introduction of sound.
You will require a pen and paper (or laptop/device) but the tutor will provide all other materials.

Screenings of extracts from films, talks by the tutor, reading materials, small and large group discussions. There will not be any work outside the class.
