Course programme

Beginning with the Lumiere brothers, the course works through early silent films, German Expressionism, Chaplin and Einstein, surrealism and the avant-garde. You will be taught to examine the influences of modernism on film making and film theory, ending with the French / Spanish avant-garde and their legacies of modernism on film form. During the course you will view some key films in the history of of film making, through a process of lectures, case-studies, film viewings and discussion.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

  • Understand the key concepts of film theory, their origins and relationship to modernism
  • Situate the historical debates about the nature of film analysis
  • Apply film theory to contemporary film
  • Use film theory to inform your own film making

Level

Beginner. You do not need any prior experience. You may find it useful to read Film Theory for Beginners, by Richard Osborne and Angie Brew before beginning this course.
