About this course

Tell which languages in Europe are Indo-European.

Proto-Indo-European languages in time and place.

List some basic characteristics of all Indo-European languages.

Tell the difference between an analytical language such as English and a language such as Latin, Sanskit or Old English.

Look at the main differences between English and Old English.

There are no other costs. You should bring some paper and a pen/pencil.

The course is a seminar/lecture. There will be time for questions towards the end of the lesson.

Course programme

Geographical and historical introduction to the Proto-Indo-European languages.

Evolution and simplification of the grammar throughout the centuries. Examples from Sanskrit, Latin, Lithuanian and Old English will be used.

Examples of etymology of some Indo-European vocabulary which is still used today (examples will be from Gothic, Hittite, Sanskrit, Persian, Baltic and Slavonic languages, Latin and Classical Greek).

We will look at the differences between Latin/Old English and English. In order to study the loss of declension, we will translate a few example sentences from Old English into English.
