IOSH Approved Foundation Course - Assisting People to Move Adults & Children
The course has been designed to give participants the basic skills necessary to ensure their own safety and that of others when assisting people to move and when handling loads at work. It has been designed in a modular format to allow flexibility and meet the needs of different staff groups. Modules A and B are core modules for all staff who handle loads and assist people to move. Modules C, D, E and F are only for staff who assist people to move.
A variety of teaching methods are used including groupwork, discussion, demonstration and practise of handling activities.
Depending on the training needs analysis the course may be delivered as a 2 or 3 day programme and is tailored for adults and children's services.
Content includes:
- Module A - Legislation and employers policy, ergonomics and risk assessment, structure and function of the spine, causes of injury, principles of safer moving and handlingModule B - Load handling, posture care and fitness
- Module C - Individual handling assessment and plans, controversial practices, mobility assistance
- Module D - Assistance with bed mobility
- Module E - Assistance with transfers and personal care
- Module F - Safe Use of equipment including beds, wheelchairs, hoists and slings
Practical activities covered can be tailored to particular services ( e.g. hospitals, schools, social care).
