Course Length
This course is full-time and takes 2 years . The course runs Monday Friday.

What will I study?
The following will be studied:

6 Core Units

Language and Communications
using communication skills, written and graphical material, selecting research material, producing relevant research data

Computer Systems
an introduction to a broad range of computing concepts including, internal operations, computer systems hardware, low level programming, operating systems

Business Information Systems
structure of organisations, information flow, health safety and security, strategy and planning, decision-making, data handling and processing

Introduction to software development
basic concepts of program design and implementation, developing analytical skills, design techniques and processes

Communications Technology
data communications systems, hardware and software, computer networks, Internet and World Wide Web

Systems Analysis and Design
principles of systems analysis and design, investigation and analysis techniques, designing solutions to problems, testing.

4 Essential and 8 Additional units from the following:

Project
planning and implementing an actual project. This unit is assessed by way of an Integrated Vocational Assessment set by Edexcel

Applications software development
planning and designing a system, customising data processing, customising user interface, programming facilities

Website Management
analysis and management of intranet or internet websites.

Human Computer Interface
HCI developments and applications, HCI and the user, examples of HCI, evaluating the effectiveness of HCI models

Database Management Systems
relational databases and flat-file structures, structured query language, normalisation, data mining and data warehousing, this unit also forms part of the IVA.

System Justification
IT requirements of a business, functions and features of hardware and software, cost benefit analysis

Management Information Systems
information, data and communications, information system concepts, organisational and management theories, planning, decision-making and control

Business Calculations
numerical tools for data manipulation, geometrical tools and techniques, graphical representation of data, accounting tools and techniques

Software Applications
storage, manipulation and output of data, process numeric data, use presentation software, manipulate and present textual and graphical information

Web Development
designing and developing web pages

Design methods
understanding the importance of using appropriate design methods to achieve creative intentions within the Design Development Cycle.

3D Modelling and Animation
extend your design skills by investigating and using digital applications for modelling, rendering and animation of 3D objects.

E- Commerce
understanding the development and scope of e-commerce, barriers to business organisation, security, legal, ethical and moral issues, developing a strategy for the development of e-commerce within an organisation.


How will I learn?
The course will be taught using a mixture of approaches including practical work, tutorials, projects and team work.

How will I be assessed?
The course is assessed by a range of methods, which include assignments, projects, case studies, practical exercises and examinations. There is also a programme of integrative assignments which link the various subjects and test competence of common skills such as problem solving, communication, planning and working with others.

Where could it lead?
BTEC National IT Practitioner qualifications develop skills needed for work in the computing section of a private company, public authority or in a software house or a computer supplier.
