COURSE STRUCTURE

The programme consists of 12 modules of 30 credits each (or the equivalent including 15-credit modules), making a total of 360 credits. You will take 120 credits each year.

You must take the compulsory module Rethinking Japan: Introduction to Modern Japanese Society and Culture, and can choose from a range of pathways, of which a minimum of 210 credits must consist of Japanese language and content modules. Up to 150 credits can be chosen from other modules offered in the Department of Cultures and Languages.

Please note: if you start the year in Japanese 2 you will be enrolled in an 'intensive Japanese 2' group (six hours a week, terms 1 and 2), followed by 'intensive Japanese 3' (six hours a week, terms 2 and 3). This means that you complete Japanese 2 and Japanese 3 content in one year.

If you have previously studied Japanese and think you might start at any level above Japanese 1 you can take a placement test between July and October.

This programme offers a great deal of flexibility, particularly in relation to the option modules you are able to choose, and a typical set of modules, divided by year, might look like this:

YEAR 1
  • Introduction to Cinema
  • Japanese 3
  • Rethinking Japan: Introduction to Modern Japanese Society and Culture (Level 4)
  • Understanding Culture: Language and Texts
YEAR 2
  • Japanese 4
  • Modern History of East Asia
  • Popular Culture in Japan and East Asia
  • Theorising Japanese Cinema
YEAR 3
  • Advanced Seminar in Japanese Culture and Society
  • Industry Placement (level 6 Arts)
