You will be introduced to the fundamentals of Latin percussion traditions, with emphasis on group playing. You will develop technique on the instruments, and will learn to play authentic rhythms, and sing accompanying chants and songs.

About this course
- Play essential grooves on a range of percussion instruments - congas, bell, shekere, surdo, pandeiro etc.
- Play in ensemble situations and lock into feel and pulse
- Read and understand 1/4, 1/8, 1/16 note notation for percussion
- build a sound practice routine
- Understand good time-keeping, relaxation when playing, good posture, and communication.
All written materials and instruments supplied. Bring note pad, tape recorder (if you have one).

- This short course will explore the most commonly heard and influential percussion traditions from Cuba and Brazil: Rumba, Mozambique and Bembé, and some generic bata toques from Cuba; Samba, Baiao, Maracatu etc. from Brazil.
- Hand and stick technique
- Learning by listening and reading percussion notation
- Learning to play together and keep good time.
