Law
This subject is very popular. It covers a wide range of interesting subject areas and students get the opportunity to do a wide range of enrichment activities.

What will I study?
In the first year you will study the following:
· Law making and the legal system: How laws are made and interpreted by the courts; the civil and criminal courts and other forms of dispute resolution; lay people and the judiciary; the legal profession and other sources of advice and funding.
· Concept of liability: An introduction to criminal liability; the underlying principles of criminal liability; the courts: procedure and sentencing; an introduction to tort; liability in negligence; the courts: procedure and damages.
In the second year you will study the following:
· Criminal law (fatal and non-fatal offences against the person): The offences of murder, voluntary manslaughter, involuntary manslaughter; non-fatal offences against the person and defences.
· Criminal law (offences against property): The offences of theft, robbery, burglary, blackmail, fraud, making off without payment; criminal damage and defences; concepts of law and morals; law and justice; judicial creativity; fault and balancing conflicting interests.

How is the course assessed?
AS-Level: Two 90 minute exams.
A2-Level: Two 120 minute exams.

What enrichment will there be?
Activities include:
· National mock trial competition.
· Nottingham for mock trials.
· Magistrates Court.
· London Parliament/Royal Courts of Justice.
· Guest speakers.
· Law Society.

What could I do next?
You can go on to study law at university or take many different types of course, particularly in the arts, humanities and social sciences. You can also go on to train to be a legal executive.
This subject provides a valuable first step for a career in law. Apart from the professions of solicitor and barrister, there are a many related careers such as a legal executive, paralegal, police officer or any role within the criminal justice system. Non-related careers include accountancy, the civil service, journalism and social work.
