Course programme

The AS course is divided into two core units:

Unit 1 - Law Making and the Legal System:

Section A: Parliamentary law making; delegated legislation; statutory interpretation; judicial precedent
Section B: Civil courts and dispute resolution; criminal courts and lay people; the legal profession, advice and funding; the judiciary

Unit 2 - The Concept of Liability:

Section A: Underlying principles of criminal liability; the courts, procedure and sentencing
Section B: Introduction to Tort - Liability in negligence; court procedure and damages

Law is fluid and continually developing, influenced and changed by everyday events. This is an exciting and stimulating course covering the operation of the English legal system. Learn about the principles of law-making and dispute-solving as well as the basics of criminal liability and negligence. Every citizen should have a working knowledge of the law and how to exercise their rights - the study of law is for eveyone, not just lawyers. This is certainly not a course purely for those wishing to enter the legal profession, neither is it a necessary qualification for those who wish to do so. Students are expected to read a quality newspaper and to keep abreast of current affairs; these elements are an integral part of the course and discussions about topical issues take place during lessons.
