Charcoal has soft, tenuous qualities that make it the perfect medium for the depiction of light. You will depict the entire tonal range of lights you see, from the lightest (the white of the paper), to the darkest (the black of your charcoal).

Course programme

You will use rubbers, charcoal and make your own paper stumps/ tortillons to help you manipulate light and dark in your drawing.
You will learn how to:
Compose a drawing
Manipulate marks
Explore tone.

Demonstration and practical application. One to one and group discussion. Basic materials will be provided but you are welcome to bring any extra or special materials. This course naturally leads onto 'Drawing 1'. You may also wish to go on to 'Develop your Drawing' or focus your drawing skills on life or portraiture or a sketchbook course.
