About this course

What are the Course Details?
The course is aimed at those wanting to get a basic overall view of the sport and leisure industry. Setting up and taking down equipment along with maintaining facility areas is a vital and important component within the sports industry.
You will also be taught the skills of front of house, how to conduct yourselves when delivering the best possible customer service.
The course requires both dedication and enthusiasm due to its diverse nature and its variety of content.
What will I Learn?
In addition to your programme you will also undertake additional qualifications in the form of Functional Skills which are aimed at improving all learners literacy and numeracy skills.
Learners will undertake 6 core units:
- Deal with accidents and emergencies
- Clean & tidy facility areas
- Dealing with customers
- Plan and prepare an activity session
- Deliver an activity session
- Set up & take down equipment
There will be classroom study, practical sessions at West Common Sports Hall, gym based sessions and weekly work experience at the Kingsway Fitness Suite.
How will I be Assessed?
All learners are assessed practically for each unit and must also complete a range of underpinning knowledge criteria which may be in the form of questions, tasks and short assignments and projects.
All work completed aims to build a portfolio of evidence throughout the year.
What Enrichments are Available?
All learners have access to a full enrichment programme.
Sport Enrichment, Sports Teams and Running are the more favourable for learners on this type of programme.
Are there any Trips or Visits?
A trip to PGL (Outdoor Pursuits Centre) which involves climbing, abseiling. kayaking, raft building and high ropes etc.
Previous years learners have also been on sports tours abroad playing against teams from other countries.
Other activities include, paint balling, theme parks, visits to sports grounds and much more ....
Is there any Work Experience?
Work experience will take place at the Kingsway Fitness Suite. Learners will undertake the role of a Recreation Assistant and complete a range of different duties. Learners must complete a set amount of work placement hours in order to complete the course.
Learners are expected to purchase a Kingsway Fitness Suite T.Shirt as part of the uniform, which is required for work placement. These are available to purchase at the start of the academic year.
What can I Progress to?
At the end of the course learners can either progress upon recommendation to NVQ 2 Exercise & Fitness or gain employment in the sport and leisure industry.
