GCSE - One-year course
This course will cover important aspects of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. The Biology portion of the course covers various aspects of health, disease and the effects of drugs. Students will also study variation, evolution and the ways in which humans affect the environment.
The Chemistry portion looks at how useful substances are obtained from rocks, how chemicals are obtained from oil and changes in the Earth and its atmosphere.
In the Physics portion we study heat transfer, electricity generation, the uses and hazards of electromagnetic radiation and radioactive substances. We also consider the origins of the universe and how it continues to change.
There is plenty of opportunity to undertake practical work as part of the course. Science is a very practical subject and many topics are taught using appropriate practicals as both class exercises and demonstrations.
Careers and Further Studies
GCSE Science is a valuable qualification and can help to open doors to a wide range of careers and Higher Education courses. In particular, GCSE Science is a requirement for anyone intending to become a primary school teacher or pursue a health-related degree course. A pass grade in Science can also be useful for anyone considering Higher Education generally.
General Entry Requirements
It is expected that students pursuing a programme of GCSE courses will have already achieved a grade C in at least three GCSE subjects and an average GCSE points score of 3.5.
