This is often of interest to students studying the Secretarial/Personal Assistant course, although it is open to other students as well.
This course is designed to enable students to widen their understanding of the law and legal issues either as a matter of general interest, or as a move towards obtaining employment in an area where knowledge of the law and legal rights is required.
The course is divided into three modules. The first two modules provide an overview of a wide number of legal issues such as:
- The purpose and sources of law
- The operation of the legal system
- The elements of a crime
- Contract law
- Negligence
The third module involves an in-depth study of Criminal Law. Throughout the course, students will be able to apply their knowledge of legal issues to problem exercises and case studies. Assessment is by externally set assignments (graded Pass, Merit or Distinction) and a one-hour multiple choice test consisting of 40 questions.
Careers and Further Studies
The ILEX course will be of interest to those wishing to enter general employment as well as those looking to work in a paralegal capacity in the legal profession. Students who meet the entry requirements may progress to BTEC or AS Level courses at SEEVIC College. Secretaries may progress to the Level 3 course
General Entry Requirements
It is expected that students pursuing a programme of GCSE courses will have already achieved a grade C in at least three GCSE subjects and an average GCSE points score of 3.5.
