The UAL Awarding Body Level 3 Extended Diploma in Art & Design is equivalent to three applied A Levels and has been designed to provide the skills, knowledge and understanding necessary to progress to degree-Level study in art and design, or employment. It provides an opportunity for those who wish to make the transition from further to higher education, apprenticeship or employment.
Course length 2 years  
13 units delivered over two years. The L3 Diploma in Art and Design is the first year of the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Art and design. The final summative unit of the Extended Diploma is offered at Level 3 or Level 4 to support progression into higher education. All units are internally assessed by assignments set by your tutors and assessment grading is subject to internal and external moderation.
Year 1 general art and design: skills building  
• Multiple project based exercises to solve complex problems.
• The application of art and design is taught delivered as projects based assignments, covering the fundamentals of art and design language, the formal elements: line, tone, shape, form, structure, pattern, scale and colour etc.
• Investigation into a broad range of materials, techniques and processes taught in well-equipped inspirational 2D & 3D studios and workshops: Observational drawing / life- drawing, printmaking, textiles, 3D model making, sculpture, ceramics, fine art illustration, photography dark-room as well as digital image manipulation based within a dedicated Apple Mac. Suite,  
• Devised creative industry scenarios and live assignments: e.g. collaborative projects the wider creative industries across college and within the community. Industry ready skills, competitions, structured /self-directed project management and independent study around self-promotion.
• Creative digital practice, image-manipulation to support the design realisation process is based within a dedicated Apple Mac. / PC suites.

Course programme

• Employability skills and industry experience e.g. team working, self-promotion and survival skills, curating and analysing health and safety issues for site specific art/design work, project management, listening skills, adaptability and flexibility via live assignments, collaborative projects and entrepreneurial activity. Portfolio preparation for UCAS application and higher education interviews.
• This qualification helps you to progress on to, BA/BSc/FdA at a Higher Education institution and apprenticeships within the wider commercial/creative based industries and supported through Cambridge Regional College.
• Employment goals: e.g. junior assistant gallery/museum sector or self-employment

• A minimum of 4 GCSEs at grades 9 - 4 (A* - C), including English or Maths and one of which must be in an art or design related subject area, or Level 2 BTEC Certificate/Extended Certificate or UAL L2 Diploma Art and Design.

In addition

• A portfolio of recent work must be presented at the Welcome Event that reflects your study of an arts related GCSE qualification achieved thus far and your interest in the arts area.

In addition to the entry qualifications listed, the offer of a place on the course is subject to the outcomes of initial assessment, which will be taken at the College as part of the admissions process. Please note that entry criteria may vary quite significantly between courses at the same level. This is to take account of the specific skills needed for success on particular courses, the length of the course and the requirements for progression to the next level. Entry criteria are given as a guide, and the exact requirements in order to obtain a place on a particular course will be confirmed following attendance at a Welcome Event/Interview.

Course work is continually assessed by a range of differentiated methods. E.g. There is regular one to one tutorial provision. Professional tutorial, self-assessment, peer review and panel reviews. A Formative assessment is recorded at the end of each term. Summative assessment is applied to your Final / Self-Initiated Project Proposal this is graded as Pass, Merit, Distinction, the final project grade is the overall value of the qualification
