Course programme

Law
AS/A2 Level - Two-year course
This course will appeal to students who have a keen interest in the legal system and in finding out how it works.

In year one (AS), the two study units concern themselves with questions such as:
  • How is law made and interpreted?
  • Where do our judges come from?
  • Why do we have two kinds of lawyers: barristers and solicitors?
  • Why do we use ordinary people in the English legal system?

In year two (A2), the two study units concern themselves with the differences between murder and manslaughter and questions such as:
  • What is the difference between theft, robbery and burglary?
  • What is the relationship between law and morals or justice?

The courses encourage students to develop an understanding of legal issues, to debate issues in class and to read widely. Students are also required to take a critical view of the law.

Careers and Further Studies
Law offers students access to a wide range of possible career and Higher Education opportunities. It combines well with most other subject areas and can lead to university courses, including a Law degree. The subject is extremely useful for those thinking of careers in banking, insurance, media, the police, civil service, management and administration, and, of course, the legal profession.

General Entry Requirements
Students will need the following:
1. An average GCSE points score of 4.7 calculated from your eight best GCSEs or equivalent vocational qualifications but must include GCSE Maths and English Language.
2. At least five GCSEs at grade C or above which must include GCSE English Language.
